Question:

Michael Phelps controversy a set up for ratings?

The other guy slowed down at the end and Michael, who everyone wanted to win, won the race out of nowhere is somewhat suspicious. This created controversy, therefore more viewers, ad therefore better television ratings. Do YOU think it was a set up and the other guy was asked to take the fall?

I sure do. Discuss.

  1. I don't think he was slowing down, it just looks that way. Michael was in the middle of his stroke while Cavaci was reaching with his hands stretched out since he had already finished his last stroke. Thats why since hes not mid stroke, it looks like hes slowing down when hes actually just reaching for the wall

  2. Swimming takes everything you've got. No doubt the other guy just ran out of steam...it happens. Nobody takes a fall at the Olympics. Some swimmers go out too fast and can't bring it home. Phelps knows how to pace himself so he has something left to kick it at the end of his races. He is awesome!

  3. No. Don't be hatin on Michael Phelps because he's magical.

  4. They are racing for the pride of their own nations and Cavic did not slow down. Phelps saves his energy and then blows away everyone else. The Olympics is the greatest stage for an athlete. Money is not a part of this because China is not bribing other countries so their ratings will increase.

  5. It seemed pretty strange, but they just viewed and say, its what it is.  I can't say one way or another, as to me this guy wanted the gold just as much as Phelps.  As far as i was concerned the other guy hit the wall first.  Now they are not gonna proceed any farther so what is done is done, but was it fair, I myself am wondering this.

  6. That's interesting, I've never considered that before. I think it was a little suspicious, I mean, Phelps won by only .01 of a second! That's unbelievable! On the other hand, why would the other guy take the fall? Do you think he was offered money, and if so, it must've been a lot if he would rather take that than the gold for his country.

  7. If someone were to rig a race, they would never make it as close as .01 second. That's way too risky in a rigged race because at real speed to the naked eye it looks like a tie. It would be impossible to coordinate the planned losing of a race at any time difference less than 0.2 seconds or so (maybe 0.15, but even that would be risky).

  8. I originally did, but after viewing countless videos and photos, I'm accepting the Phelps victory.

This video was especially helpful; it's a frame-by-frame slowdown http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypaT6Q1RK...

Oh, and Ian Crocker lost 3rd place by .01 seconds.  Dara Torres lost the 50m freestyle by .01 seconds.  No one seems to be complaining about that.

  9. I don't think he'd take a fall and lose a chance at winning a gold medal just for tv ratings .  It was crazzzy coincidence!

  10. Nah.

  11. NO OLYMPIC ATHLETE would take a fall!!!!!  THAT'S ABSURD!!!! Do you not realize how hard these people work their whole lives and the sacrifices they make???  Not to mention, the "heroes" they become in their countries after winning Olympic gold.  No Olympic....anyway...And you say "everyone" wanted Michael to win the race...that's not true.  The other swimmers in the race have fans watching all over the world as well.  And like someone else mentioned...for you to say Michael won "out of nowhere"....you must have not watched the same race as me.  AND...as to who touched the wall first....the touchpad sensors measure to 1/1000th of a second.  Plus, the Olympic committee has dozens of cameras and film they review.  I promise you, Michael Fred Phelps touched the wall first!

  12. No. Dude, no one even knows what race your talking about, but it's highly unlikely. If it's the 100m butterfly, because Michael Phelps got 50.58 and from Serbia, Milorad Cavic, 50.59. It's not even one millisecond. Michael Phelps took an extra stroke, therefor making him the least bit faster. The other guy wanted to win badly. Also, I'm sure the Serbian team wouldn't protest if it was rigged. Just take the fact.

  13. No, because people were ALREADY watching.

  14. I don't think he had his eye on Phelps at the end. Highly doubtful.

  15. He won the race out of nowhere? Did you not see him right on that other guys hip the whole time? All he was doing was waitin for the last 15 meters to perform his magic 1 more time.

  16. GET THE **** OFF OUR INTERWEBNETS!

    lolwut?  JK

  17. Absolutely Phelp's questionable win is a contrived conspiracy orchestrated by the "One World Government" cabal. My own research has uncovered a connection between the Illuminati, the Masons, and most frightening Aliens who secretly implanted small mind control chips in the heads of all the opposing swimmers forcing them to slow down paving the way for the Phelp's sweep of the gold medals. And you ask what will Michael Phelp's do with all of the gold medals? They'll be used by the Sasquatch militia to fund the downfall of the U.S. government leading to the rise of a mutant Bigfoot master race.

Yes...there's no doubt Michael Phelp's win was rigged. Duh!

  18. No, it was just normal olympic drama!

Phelps is known for having a strong finish in every event.  The other guy, you can see in the replay, slowed down and glided into the wall. Phelps kept pushing.

  19. NO, just coincidence & normal olympic drama.

  20. Obviously not since the Serbian racers coach protested the race, do you not listen at all?

  21. Um, no. These people have been working there whole lives to make it to the Olympics and win gold. There would not have been a "set-up" for it. The TV people can re run it all they want for viewers, sure, to create controversy, but the real race was legit.

  22. Most people watching the event were already watching when the race began; a lot of people are keeping their eye on Michael. Can you tell me how they retroactively created ratings?

  24. No, because there Dara Torres lost by one one hundredth of a second, also - things happen. How would it be possible to plan and get two people to touch the wall one one hundredth of a second apart? Since it's not a judged sport, and is timed by the pads on the wall, I don't see how that would work.

  25. No, I don't think so.  I think it was just a really close race.  The overhead camera views made it look like the other guy won, but on the underwater camera it clearly showed Phelps touching the wall first.

  26. i dont think that anybody would give away a gold medal in the olympics.
