Michael Phelps dominates Men’s 100m butterfly semi-finals – 2012 London Olympic Games
Most decorated Olympian of all times, Michael Phelps of USA dominated the semi-finals of Men’s 100m butterfly on sixth day of the swimming events at the 2012 London Olympic Games in London Aquatics Centre on Thursday, August 2.
The 27-year-old Phelps smothered his challengers with his scintillating form in the double lap butterfly discipline and made his way to the finishing blockade as the top fastest swimmer. With his continued efforts, he showed no leniency to his strongest
rival, Chad le Clos of South Africa and qualified into the final as top contender for gold medal.
Phelps stayed more than a half body length ahead of his closest challenger and tapped the finishing blockade with the timing of 50.86 seconds.
His fastest qualification spot of the race was trailed by South African swimmer, le Clos, who made his way to the playoff as second best finisher with the timing of 51.42 seconds.
The South African player was followed by Tyler McGill of USA, who remained 0.19 seconds apart and transpired on the finishing end as third fastest swimmer by producing a time of 51.61 seconds.
Similarly, fourth fastest qualification spot of the discipline was secured by Milorad Cavic of Serbia, who stayed just 0.05 seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and hit the wall with an effort of 51.66 seconds.
Cavic enjoyed an advantage of 0.09 seconds over Joeri Verlinden of Netherlands, who proved his eligibility for fifth fastest position by submitting a time of 51.75 seconds.
The Dutch swimmer remained just 0.01 seconds faster from Steffen Deibler of Germany, who occupied sixth best qualifying position of the race with an effort of 51.76 seconds.
Deibler was traced by Konrad Czerniak of Poland, who remained only 0.02 seconds apart and touched the wall with the timing of 51.78 seconds for seventh position.
Last qualifying spot of the event was secured by Evgeny Korotyshkin of Russian Federation, who reported a time of 51.85 seconds and ended eight in the race.
Phelps was contented with his fastest qualification effort and claimed that he would try hard to dominate the final and secure gold medal of the discipline.
