Michael Phelps father?

I wonder why he was not present and they have not mentioned him. Phelps bio states his parents were divorced, but wouldn't you think his Dad still would have been present?

Typical of the sick amercican judicial system, during a divorce fathers are portrays as monsters and mothers are the victims and get the glory and the honors. This successful young man is a victim of this system and the enabler of another woman that is now on world-wide tv being the father and mother. What a shame how we look in front of the world! ....His father seems to be caring and is limited to observe.....you cannot fight the system.

No, his father is not a criminal, he is just isolated from the family as many american women punish thier ex husbands for divorce while they shop and drive brand new cars paid by us!!

I read that his father does not have a close relationship with his kids.  He lives in Maryland and was at the Athens games but not in Beijing, but he watches him on TV and he thought about doing an interview but declined because he didn't want to take away from Michael's glory.  It's sad and unfortunate but that's what happens a lot of the time with divorced parents.  His name is Fred by the way and Michael is names after him Michael Fred Phelps III.

I actually also read this, that his father and his mother divorced when michael was 9. Michael, his mother, his 2 sisters, grew farther apart from their dad/husband and the divorce was finalized in 1994. Although, they reconciled him. But later they grew apart again. They tried to get an interview with him (fred) but he declined it saying that he didn't want to get in the way of Michael, i believe he did not want to be a distraction. Smart i think, if michael and his father are apart, why bring it up in the middle of the olympics when michael is doing so well. As far as people getting upset over him not being there, think about how michael feels. And it is not like his father isn't watching michael, i bet his dad supports him just as much as his mother, just in different ways. He watches at home and from "afar". He lives in Maryland also. Thats all i know about Fred. As far as i know, their relationships are as far apart as can  be. His father is also not in beijing, but in Greeece

I think he left them and didn't want nothing to do with them anymore. I hate fathers like that.
