Who else thinks Phelps the best swimmer in the world? So far he has won 11 gold medals and he continues to break world records. ♥♥♥

I would say that he is currently the best swimmer who competes in organized, sanctioned swimming competitions.

How would anyone know if he is the best in the entire world without seeing everyone in the world swim?

I think it's tough to compare athletes today compared to athletes 50 years ago. Back then an athlete had to work 40 or 50 hours a week and train before and after work. Who knows how great these men and women would have been if they'd had the opportunity and money to be able to spend 8 hours a day training with a team of coaches, sport psychologists etc. And who knows if Michael Phelps would be as good as he is if he wasn't lucky enough to have that. He's a great athlete but it's unfair to compare him with everyone who has ever competed in the sport.
