Michael Phelps pockets Men’s 200m butterfly gold: Day four – US Swimming Olympic Trials
Fourteen-time Olympic champion, Michael Phelps pocketed gold medal of the Men’s 200m butterfly on day four of the 2012 US Swimming Olympic Trials in Omaha on Thursday, June 28.
The 27-year-old Phelps, who qualified into the playoff as strongest swimmer for gold medal, met hopes of his supporters by snaring gold medal of the distant butterfly event.
With his unmatchable pace, he dominated his way throughout the four-lap butterfly event as he captured gold medal of the event with the timing of 1 minute and 53.65 seconds.
His title-claiming effort remained almost two seconds faster from Tyler Clary of FASTCA, who seized silver medal of the discipline by posting a time of 1 minute and 55.12 seconds.
The second position holder was chased by Bobby Bollier of STANPC, who stayed 0.67 seconds apart and settled on the finishing wall for bronze medal by producing a time of 1 minute and 55.79 seconds.
Fourth position of the discipline was secured by Davis Tarwater of MAC-NC, who remained full body length apart and transpired on the finishing end with the timing of 1 minute and 56.83 seconds.
Similarly, Tarwater was followed by Mark Dylla of ABSCGA, who stayed 1.01 seconds slower from his foregoing swimmer and occupied fifth position of the event with an effort of 1 minute and 57.84 seconds.
Dylla was traced by Dakota Hodgson of NAC-SE, who stayed 0.23 seconds apart and tapped the finishing end with the timing of 1 minute and 58.07 seconds.
Last event of the session was Women’s 200m Individual Medley (IM), where Caitlin Leverenz outsmarted her challengers over the finishing end for the title of the discipline.
With her epic pace and gruelling start, she enjoyed an advantage of almost one second over her toughest challenger and posted a time of 2 minutes and 10.22 seconds for gold medal.
The champion was trailed by Ariana Kukors of BSS-FL, who stayed 1.08 seconds apart and secured silver medal of the event with an effort of 2 minutes and 11.30 seconds.
Silver medallist was chased by Elizabeth Pelton of T2-FL, who remained 0.25 seconds behind and submitted a time of 2 minutes and 11.55 seconds for bronze medal.
Third position holder was trailed by Maya Dirado of STANPC, who stayed almost 0.70 seconds apart and reported a time of 2 minutes and 12.26 seconds for fourth position.
Fifth position of the 200m discipline was secured by Elizabeth Beisel of ABF-NE, who was 0.11 seconds behind and clocked a timing of 2 minutes and 12.37 seconds.
Phelps and Leverenz expressed contentment over their accomplishments at the prize ceremony of the championship and articulated that they will try to achieve the same at the forthcoming Olympic Games.
