Michael Phelps pockets Men’s 200m butterfly gold: Day two – 2012 Columbus Grand Prix
Michael Phelps of North Baltimore pocketed gold medal of the Men’s 200m butterfly on second day of the 2012 Columbus Grand Prix at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on Saturday, March 10.
The Columbus Grand Prix is the fourth stop of 2011-12 USA Swimming Grand Prix Series that is a seven-stage event.
The 26-year-old Phelps remained prominently ahead of his challengers throughout the event and proved his eligibility for gold medal by posting a time of 1 minute and 55.32 seconds. His title claiming effort remained nearly eight seconds under the Federation
Internationale de Natation Amateur (FINA) A-Time Qualification Standard of 2 minutes and 03.99 seconds.
He was followed by Tom Kremer of Una Peak-PC, who stayed 3.02 seconds slower from his former finisher and touched the finishing end with an effort of 1 minute and 58.34 seconds for silver medal.
The 17-year-old Kremer remained 0.97 seconds ahead of Nashville Aquatics’ Dakota Hodgson, who followed him on the podium for bronze medal with an effort of 1 minute and 59.31 seconds.
Subsequently, the crowd witnessed scintillating struggles of Zsuzsa Jakabos of HUN, who occupied gold medal of the Women’s 200m butterfly. The 22-year-old Jakabos upset her challengers by capturing gold medal of the event in a time of 2 minutes and 08.09
seconds. Her nerve-wrecking effort was almost four seconds slower from the American mark of 2 minutes and 04.14 seconds, made by Mary DeScenza of USA in 2009.
She was followed by Kim Vandenberg of New York Athletics, who cementer her place on the medal rostrum for silver medal by submitting a time of 2 minutes and 10.17 seconds.
The third spot of the discipline was trailed by Elaine Breeden of Stanford Swimming, who stayed 0.71 seconds away from Vandenberg and tapped the finishing end with the timing of 2 minutes and 10.88 seconds for bronze medal.
The 23-year-old Breeden remained almost one second ahead of Allison Schmitt of North Baltimore, who settled fourth on the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 11.85 seconds.
The arena enjoyed incredible effort of Phelps, who articulated his desire of accomplishing the same at forthcoming 2012 London Olympics.
