Michael Phelps shines in Men’s 200m back-stroke race: 2011 FINA World Cup, Berlin
Fourteen-time Olympic champion, Michael Phelps appeared in the last splash of the evening and gave his remarkable performance in back-stroke swimming at the 2011 FINA World Cup series in Berlin, Germany, on Sunday, October 23. Phelps went on to win Men’s
200m back-stroke title at the end of the session.
In the final session of the meet, Michael Phelps of United States was facing Poland’s Radoslaw Kawecki and Spain’s Aschwin Wildeboer in the 200m back-stroke race. As the whistle blew, Phelps got off to a thrilling start and knocked out his rivals by thrashing
the finishing wall in a mouth shattering mark of 1 minute and 50.34 seconds.
In the meantime, Kawecki produced an impressive splash in front of the large arena and grabbed silver medal by posting a matchless time of 1 minute and 51.37 seconds. The bronze title went to Wildeboer in an intriguing spot of 1 minute and 52.09 seconds.
On the other hand, the splash between Fieyi Cheng of China and Christian Diener of Colombia for the fourth and fifth positions was a neck-to-neck battle. Cheng clinched the fourth position by hitting the finishing the wall in an impressive mark of 1 minute
and 52.88 seconds. In addition, the fifth place honours went to Diener in a time of 1 minute and 53.16 seconds.
Furthermore, Jacob Pebley of United States was not far behind in the respective race and earned sixth position by touching the finishing wall in a blot of 1 minute and 53.47 seconds. Meanwhile, Yannick Lebherz of Colombia produced a matchless swim over his
compatriot, Philip Glania Jan by powering the finishing wall in a time of 1 minute and 56.49 seconds to claim seventh position in the respective race. The eighth position went to Lebherz in a time of 1 minute and 58.05 seconds.
Earlier, Therese Alshammar of Sweden won the Women’s 50m butterfly title by posting a winning time of 25.18 seconds. Meanwhile, Jeanette Ottesen earned silver medal in a time of 25.50 seconds and Dorothea Brandt claimed bronze title in a mark of 26.35 seconds.
After the swims, medals were distributed to the winners at the close of the session. The 2011 FINA World Cup series is offering a good opportunity to all young guns of swimming nations to prepare themselves hard for their upcoming heats.
