Question:

Michael Phelps vs Ian Crocker question?

I was just watching the semi finals of the 100 m Butterfly and they were discussing the different scenarios of the Phelps vs Crocker battle in the 100m Butterfly.

I didn't quite understand what happens if Crocker beat Phelps and vice-versa and what the implications are with the medley. Does the winner HAVE to swim the medley qualifier or does the loser have to swim the Qualifier and not the finals.

So technically, Crocker can decide to swim the Medley final and deny Phelps his hypothetical 8th gold medal

Can someone clarify/elaborate?

Thanks

  3. The medley team is decided by the team coaches and is not decided by the winners of the individual races. The semi finals often feature swimmers who are not even in the individual event in order to conserve the energies of the better swimmers for the finals then the coach decides who will swim. An example is the Australian womens team for the medley relay where Libby Tricket didn't swim the final despite being the world record holder for the individual event.

Either way, the semifinalists also get a gold medal if the team wins the finals so he would still get the gold even if he only swam the semis.
