Michael Phelps wins 100m butterfly at the 2011 Eric Namesnik Grand Prix – Swimming News
Legendary swimmer, Michael Phelps has won another gold medal on day one of the 2011 Eric Namesnik Grand Prix at Ann Arbor, Michigan.
This is the third last stop of the 2011 USA Grand Prix Series that has been full of fame with the presence of great Olympians including the likes of Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte and Natalie Coughlin.
Phelps, who disappointed the arena in the morning session by producing sluggish swims in the preliminary rounds of the Men’s 200m freestyle and 100m butterfly, performed unimaginably well in the finals of the same events. Phelps qualified as the eight fastest
swimmer into the finals of the 200m freestyle, while he emerged as the third fastest swimmer to proceed to the 100m butterfly final.
Phelps turned his opponents upside down when he clocked a timing of 1:48.45 minutes to earn the gold medal for 200m freestyle and aroused the hopes of arena for the 100m butterfly final.
Moments after his victory, North Baltimore’s Phelps once again proved his eligibility for the 100m butterfly crown with a timing of 52.30 seconds, ahead of the Una Gsc-FL’s Marcin Cieslak, who touched the wall in 53.08 seconds for the silver medal.
Unlike the 200m event, the Beijing Champion was in a lead of 0.55 seconds from his opponent Cieslak, completing the first lap of the race in 24.56 seconds, as compared to Cieslak’s 25.11 seconds effort. The third fastest swimmer until the first lap was Phelps’s
team-member Christopher Brady, who clocked 25.16 seconds in the first lap ahead of the Wolverine Club’s Peng Wu, who finished in 25.41 seconds.
Phelps completed the second lap with a wonderful timing of 27.74 seconds to earn the gold medal in 52.30 seconds, while Cieslak finished the lap in 27.97 seconds to climb the podium for the silver medal in 53.08 seconds. The arena witnessed a glazing swim
from Wolverine’s Wu, who out-touched Baltimore’s Brady in the second lap to reach the podium for a bronze medal in a time of 53.26 seconds, against Brady’s 53.84 seconds. Wu completed the second lap almost one second faster than Brady, clocking a 27.85 seconds
effort in contrast to Brady’s 28.68 seconds.
Swim Mac Carolina’s Davis Tarwater touched the wall in a time of 53.93 seconds to secure the fifth fastest spot and was followed by Brazilian Mil T’s Henrique Martins, who posted in a time of 54.08 seconds.
Phelps secured two podium finishes on the same day, to the visible delight of the arena. The American was very happy with his dual gold success in the event. Phelps claimed that he would give more to his fans in the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, in
July.
