I asked this question last night but i want more answers because i don' t think i could get a lot of answers asking it at one o'clock in the morning.

I am a fan of phelps but i did research on the 1972 olympics and i found out that in 1972, they didn't have the 50m freestyle like they do now. I'm 100% sure that Spitz would've gotten that medal(i mean c'mon, he broke every world record that was available for him to break) and gotten 8 medals too.

Also, back iin the day, they had speedos and NO swimming cap like they do now.<<--haha just additional info i found.

If u don't believe me

now:(well actually 2004, but didn't have it...still the same as this year though.)

Therefore, it would be a tie, not a broken record. I'm not bashing on anyone, i just sorta feel bad for spitz. Maybe it's all a 'what if'.

  1. It could even be argued that Spitz was better, because he broke the world record in each event, while Phelps did not.

  2. Yeah, he broke the record so thats all that really matters.

We cant go back in time and see if Mark Spitz could do it, he probably could.

But one day someone will beat Michael Phelps record (maybe), and I'm sure it'll we be a lot more high tech and updated.

  3. Plus he had that big old whopping 70 mustache that had to slow him down a bit too. I think your right.
