Michael Pineda’s injury a huge loss to New York Yankees – MLB Update

According to a leading sports website, New York Yankees have announced that Michael Pineda will be missing the entire season due to a labrum tear in his right shoulder. Pineda’s injury is a huge loss for the Yankees, who have not been able to live up to
the expectations since the start of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Pineda was acquired from Seattle Mariners in a trade earlier this year and many of the national and international baseball writers consider him a valuable asset for New York. In his rookie year, the right hander showed some great pitching skills to become
a popular figure among baseball fans.
In his 28 starts past season, the 23 year old earned a decent 9-10 record with 3.74 ERA. Using his fastballs and curveballs to great effect, he struck out 173 and walked just 55. For his consistency performances in second half of 2011 season, Pineda finished
fifth for the American League Rookie of the Year Award.
Yankees were thrashed 0-3 in their opening series of the season and they have not been able to fully recover from that humiliation as yet. Without a shadow of a doubt, Manager Joe Girardi and General Manager Brian Cashman have some serous thinking to do
to find a suitable replacement for Pineda but it also gives an opportunity to other starting pitchers to secure a place in the team.
"For this year, it's a loss," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He was a guy that we were counting on this year. We traded for him, but unfortunately, he's hurt. We're going to have to get him back at some point next year."
"I'm optimistic he's gonna be back," Girardi continued. "He's young and he's strong. But I can't tell you exactly when. I know that Dr. Ahmad said, what, 12 months? That's if things go right. Sometimes in rehabs you have little setbacks."
Pineda is expected to have a surgery on his shoulder next week to repair the tear. The arthroscopic surgery will be performed by New York Mets’ team physician Dr David Altchek at the request of Pineda’s agent.
