Michael Pineda’s nine strike-outs helps Seattle Mariners humiliate San Diego Padres, 4-0: MLB Update
Seattle Mariners’ starter, Michael Pineda had a notable day as he pitched seven innings and had nine strike-outs in the Mariners’ 4-0 victory against the San Diego Padres at the Petco Park, San Diego, on May 21.
Pineda did not permit even a single run on two hits. He threw 99 pitches with an ERA of 2.16 and gave away just one walk. Pineda expressed his excitement as, “Today is a big day for me, yes. It's my first time hitting in the big leagues. The second
time when the pitcher, a ground ball nice and easy, he's looking for third base and I'm running fast.”
During the first inning, no score was added in the score-board from both sides. The Mariners got off the mark in the second inning by adding two runs in it and led off with 2-0. Mike Wilson hit two RBIs single, one towards the right field and the other
was a sacrifice fly off the centre field position. Franklin Gutierrez scored first run and Brendan Ryan posted another one to complete a two-run campaign.
The third inning passed away score-less, but in the fourth inning, the Mariners got a 3-0 lead when Wilson doubled to deep right centre and Ryan scored a single run. The fifth inning went score-less as the pitchers threw disciplined pitches. The final
score was taken by Jack Wilson on throwing error of the Padres’ catcher Kyle Phillips during sixth inning. The score-card moved to 4-0 at the end of sixth inning.
The pitchers of the Mariners restricted the Padres’ batters to score no run throughout the game. Both the teams were unable to score runs in the last three innings.
The Mariners’ Manager, Eric Wedge, was pleased with the performance of Pineda. During press conference, Wedge said, “Michael threw another good ballgame. It was a different type of ballgame for him, seeing as how he had to go up and hit and he was
on the basepaths a couple times. All in all, he handled himself tremendous, as he has all year long.”
The Padres’ starter, Clayton Richard was shaky with the ball as he pitched five innings with an ERA of 4.85 and allowed three runs on seven hits. The relievers gave away one run on two hits in their combined four innings pitches.
