Michael Putnam retains the lead midway through the second round of the Albertsons Boise Open
Michael Putnam of the United States retained the outright lead at the Albertsons Boise Open Presented by Kraft, following another good round on Friday, September 14, 2012.
On day one, Putnam fired a stunning nine-under par 62 and shared the lead with Andrew Svoboda and Tyrone Van Aswegen.
During the second round, he completed his first round performance with a great display of the game at the Hillcrest Country Club.
His start was no different than Thursday’s, as he rattled three birdies in a row on the first three holes of the day.
He then added another two shots on the sixth and the eighth hole, with a bogey sandwiched in between them.
His start on the back nine was not as impressive as it was on the front nine. He parred the first three holes, prior to conceding the second bogey of the day on the 13th hole.
Afterwards, he once again regained his momentum and birdied three of the last four holes of the day.
In the presence of some of the best players in the field, Putnam played brilliantly without any sign of pressure and pulled two shots clear of his compatriot Richard H. Lee.
He now settled at a 15-under par 127, which was also the best two-round score in the history of the course.
"It's the same exact grass we have at home," Putnam said. "We're just comfortable with it. Little chips around the greens, where some guys grew up with Bermuda (grass) probably fools them the way Bermuda fools us”.
Right from the start of the first round, he has managed to sign a total of 17 birdies on 36 holes, which is also another record at the Hillcrest Country Club.
"That's a lot of birdies," Putnam said with smile as big as the outdoors. "I've had it going at home but this course is perfect. It's as easy as it's ever been out here with zero wind and soft greens”.
In the meantime, Lee recorded the best round of the day, with a nine-under par 62. His round included 10 birdies against a lone bogey.
