Michael Putnam shares early lead at the Albertsons Boise Open Presented by Kraft
Michael Putnam fired a stunning 62 in the opening round of the Albertsons Boise Open Presented by Kraft to share an early lead with fellow American Andrew Svoboda and Tyrone Van Aswegen of South Africa.
Putnam kicked off his round at the Hillcrest Country Club, with a strong roster full of almost all the top-ranked Web.com Tour players. However, his great control over his game helped him edge past his rivals.
Getting off to a solid start in relatively fair conditions in Boise, the 2010 Utah Championship winner seemed confident right from the beginning of the round. He judged the ball well on the fairways and greens.
Starting on the 10th hole, he recorded four birdies on the back nine for a four-under par score. He gave his confidence a boost when he birdied the first four holes in a row on the front nine.
He then rattled off another birdie on the difficult par-four seventh hole to surge to the top of the leaderboard.
According to the golf commentators, Putnam performance was phenomenal, not only because he grabbed the share of the lead but also because of his confidence while playing shots on the course.
"It was as easy as it's ever played," said Putnam, who has made four previous starts in Boise. "Zero wind and a perfect temperature”.
"Today everything felt comfortable,” he added. “I was never in between clubs and even if I was, I didn't feel I was in between shots," he said. "That's what happens on days like today”.
In the meantime, Aswegen also commented about the weather being too good to the players on Thursday. According to him, the wind was completely absent from the course, making the conditions even easier.
"This is probably the best weather we've had all year. There was no wind all day long," said Aswegen, who was in the third-to-last group of the afternoon. "The greens were pure. Just put it on your line and the ball's going to go in the hole”.
Their total of a nine-under par 62 was also the lowest ever first-round score since the tournament shifted to Treasure Valley in 1990.
