Michael Putnam takes home the Mexico Championship title – Golf news
Michael Putnam secured his second Web.com Tour title at the Mexico Championship Presented by Banamex, after he fired a six-under par 66, to record a two-stroke victory over Whee Kim, Wes Roach and Alex Prugh,
on Sunday, May 26, 2013.
The tournament was being staged at the El Bosque Golf Club in Leon, featuring some of the prominent names on the Web.com Tour, while offering a total of $700,000 as prize fund.
Entering the final round, Putnam was having a four-stroke deficit against the overnight leaders Prugh and Kim, to share the eighth spot on the leaderboard.
While Prugh and Kim failed to record an under par score, Putnam took advantage of the situation and recorded seven birdies and an eagle to stun his opponents on the course.
The first prize of $126,000 allowed the American to jump from the 11th spot to the top of the Web.com Tour’s money list.
"Anytime you have the No. 1 on your back you know you've been playing well," Putnam said. "And to win and also lead the money list is a really cool thing. ... I came to Mexico to win. "I came here this week because
I wanted to win the golf tournament."
Talking to the reporter, he also revealed that he was a bit nervous while making his tee shot on the 18th hole, as it was really important for him to save the par, in a bid to strengthen his chances of finishing
at the top.
“When I hit my 4-iron I hit it a little low on the face and I was definitely holding my breath because I didn’t know if it would get over,” he revealed. “I knew if it got over it would go in the bunker because
of the line that it was on.”
He got off to a brilliant start, as he birdied four of the first five holes that he played. He then bogeyed the seventh hole, however, he managed to recover it by draining an amazing eagle putt on the very next
hole that he played, to reach the turn in five under.
The back nine of the course witnessed him add another three shots to his scorecard, while conceding two bogeys, to record a 13-under par tournament score.
