Michael Schumacher – “I'm here on a mission”
Some people can be defeated but never destroyed. Same holds true for the living legend of Formula One, Michael Schumacher. Statistically the world’s best racer ever, Michael told the media earlier this week that he is confident
he can still add another championship to his incredible record of seven world titles.
Schumacher undoubtedly stands as the best racer ever in Formula One history, in terms of his race records. With his 91 Grand Prix victories and 68 pole positions, the German has conquered the Formula One tracks all across the
globe. However, as the racer returned to the grid last season, the immense fanfare and hype of the driver vanished soon, as he failed to even show a glimpse of the ‘good old Schumi’ all through the season.
The 42-year-old made his comeback to Formula One at the beginning of the 2010 season, after 3 years of retirement. In December 2009, he announced to have signed a deal for the next three years with Mercedes GP. The news received
an overwhelming response from auto racing enthusiasts. However, soon his cheering fans were disappointed by his campaign, as he underperformed in many races. The team failed to provide the driver with a competitive car, while he failed to get the best out
of what he was handed with.
As the caravan of cars returned from the season’s mid break, the Mercedes GP team boss and Formula One veteran, Ross Brawn announced to halt all the development work on the team’s 2010 car. He accepted the fact that the squad
was already out of the title war. He further insisted that the team factory must soon begin preparing for the next season’s car so that they could return to the next grid in a completely new form and spirit.
However, as the season came to an end, the world’s most aggressive racer was not seen anywhere better than the 9th place finish. Although the team supported him immensely by blaming the uncompetitive car and the Bridgestone
tyres for his poor performance; however, the stats told a different story altogether. Schumacher’s teammate and fellow citizen, Nico Rosberg, who is much junior to him in age and experience, earned 70 points more than him and stood two places ahead of him
in a similar car.
However, the World Champ has neither lost his self-belief nor determination, the traits that helped him reach the heights where he stands today. While answering a reporter’s question this Thursday he assured that he is physically strong and mentally stable,
and can certainly bag another championship.
The German driver said, "Look, we have a three-year project. Very clearly right now, we are not where we want to be. We've put a lot of effort into coming back and are optimistic we have a chance. But in the history of Formula 1, when does it ever happen
that you come back straightaway from this level to win in just one year? Very rarely.”
He further added, "So I'm sure we can fight for wins this year and we might be able to fight for the championship. I hope so. I'm here on a mission and I want to succeed. I want to perform and I'm going to put 100 per cent into it. And if that's not the
case in 2011, then we will have to do it in the final year.”
