Michael Schumacher - a return worth nothing
Seven time world champion Michael Schumacher decided to make a resilient comeback to the Formula 1 circuit this year after retiring from the sport in 2006. The German returned hoping that he will not have to struggle in any way and there will be no walls
in his way. However, things turned out to be completely different as he now claims that his car has a lot of understeer and he is not getting used to the car. The former world champion has been highly criticized due to his unprofessional attitude this year
and some very silly “Schumacher moments”.
This has been one of the biggest upsets in the history of Formula 1 as Michael has not been able to outpace his younger teammate Nico Rosberg in the same car. It is humanly impossible to explain his underperformance in this scenario and the German will have
to come up with better excuses in order to convince his fans and critics. Besides that, it has been almost a year now since he has been driving the same car. How long does it take a driver to get used to the settings of a car? In addition, it is quite unprofessional
from Mercedes as well as the team boss Ross Brawn worked alongside Schumacher in Ferrari for almost 10 years. The team should have at least made some preparations before signing the seven time world champion in order to secure this years’ performance.
However, one cannot blame Mercedes much as Michael has not been trying more than he is trying to explain his excuses. There were many rumours stating that the German might be replaced next season but Ross Brawn stated that that is the last thing on the teams’
mind. Mercedes stated that they will begin working on their car for the 2011 season and make sure that they fulfil Michael’s requirements this time and make everything right. The team is more motivated than ever before and are hoping for a great result next
year with the help of the former world champion.
Nevertheless, this season has revealed that the great Michael Schumacher is nothing but a car dependant driver. If a team provides him what he wants, he will give a performance no one can even dream. Otherwise, Michael does not like getting used to certain
settings and that is how the situation unfolds. This is not how a Formula 1 driver is supposed to behave and this is not how a driver is suppose to think. Schumacher is currently at the 10th spot in the drivers’ standings and Mercedes is in 4th
place in the constructors’ standings.
There is no doubt that Michael is one of the greatest drivers of all time but he is definitely not a team player. If we look at his past seasons with Ferrari as well, he has always used his team’s help in every way he can to secure his title with Rubens
Barrichello and Eddie Irvine as his wingmen. It is not a secret that neither Rubens nor Eddie were ever in good relations with the German driver.
After being criticized by almost every one, Michael is still planning to stay in the Formula 1 circuit and one cannot blame him. Maybe he is looking for something similar to what Nikki Lauda did when he returned to Formula 1 after a break and won a title
a couple of years after his return. However, it would have been better if the seven time world champion did not return as his return has exposed the former champion and has lost many of his fans due to disappointing performances.
No one can take away what Michael did in his peak time and he will always be appreciated for that. However, there is a time when a sportsman just has to retire and sit back or maybe play a part in the team without sitting in the drivers’ seat. It is time
that Schumacher should consider racing in the 2011 season as well or it might earn him some more criticism and throw all his hard work down the drain.
