Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel win the ROC Nations Cup – Formula 1 news
Retired Michael Schumacher and Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel, who were representing team Germany, have won the Race of Champions (ROC) Nations Cup for the sixth consecutive year that was held in Bangkok.
“This is a historic day. It was already very special to win five times in a row but this new record just feels great,” said Schumacher. “The Race of Champions is a nice event with a nice set-up; there are great guys here and tough competition. We were pretty
scared of the guys on Team France but in the end they lost time in the final heats so we were lucky to be consistent the whole way through.”
“Even Michael hasn’t managed six titles in a row before so this is something special,” Vettel added.
The final was between team Germany and team France, which was represented by Romain Grosjean and rally racer Sebastien Ogier. Schumacher defeated Grosjean while the fight between Vettel and Ogier was won by Vettel.
Grosjean admitted that competing against team Germany was definitely a tough challenge but said that they fought as hard as was possible for them. He said that last year they reached the semi final and advanced to the final this year so they are looking
forward to actually winning the title for the first time next year.
Ogier has also congratulated Schumacher and Vettel saying that winning the title for six times consecutively is obviously a great achievement. He said that while they tried their best, both Germans were strong and they will try better next time.
Later in the individual events, Grosjean first won over Vettel in the quarter finals after Vettel suffered a spin and then in the semi final event he defeated Schumacher. In the final event, he became the champion by beating Le Mans legend, Tom Kristensen.
Schumacher retired after 22 years in F1 at the end of the 2012 F1 season; Vettel became the youngest triple champion by beating Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso by three points and Grosjean’s future with Lotus F1 is still to be determined as the complete driver
line up remains unannounced.
