Michael Schumacher confident with Mercedes MGP-W02 and eyeing top places – Formula 1 news
Mercedes team driver and seven-time Formula 1 champion, Michael Schumacher, has hoped for a great 2011 season ahead after some upgrades came in the car in the final Barcelona test.
He said that the team is going in the right direction and the upgraded MGP-W02 will finish this season on a high.
Michael Schumacher previously said that Mercedes are going to be the catch up car for the season because he and his teammate, Nico Rosberg, were unable to put some mileage on car.
In the Valencia and Jerez tests, both drivers were unable to fine-tune the car because they never did enough laps. Now, Schumacher’s views about the car have changed because he was able to top the time sheets on the fourth day of the Barcelona test, which
was the fastest overall in Barcelona, and his teammate topped the table on the final day of the test.
Schumacher said, “We are going in the right direction. Definitely we should be in a good position this year. For this assessment I would like to first wait a few races.”
He further added that at least the reliability issues of the car have been taken care of which is good for the team.
Schumacher made his comeback in the Formula 1 in the 2010 season after a gap of three years and had a miserable year as he scored half points than his teammate Nico Rosberg.
Talking about his last year’s performance he said that, “I never thought that I would come back after three years and everything would be as before. I am a realist in this respect... it is true that the re-acclimatisation has taken longer than I hoped.”
He further added that the Formula 1 sport has changed a lot from the time he left it in 2006. He further hoped that he will live up to the expectations of the spectators by being more competitive than 2010.
As far as the championship contenders are concerned, Schumacher said that Red Bull are still the fastest and Sebastian Vettel will be the favourite going into the 2011 season.
