Michael Schumacher dominates FP2 at 2012 Australian GP – Formula 1 news
Michael Schumacher of Mercedes AMG topped the timesheets with the fastest lap time during the second free practice session of the 2012 Australian Grand Prix held at Albert Park in Melbourne on Friday afternoon.
The times kept on reducing throughout the session as the cars run on slick tyres and browbeaten the conditions of the drying track.
Seven-time world champion, Schumacher hit the quickest lap time of 1 minute and 29.183 seconds and remained just a little ahead of the youngster, Nico Hulkenberg of Force India who set his best time of 1 minute and 29.292 seconds while he impressed everyone
with his pace.
Sauber driver Sergio Perez set his best lap time of 1 minute and 30.199 seconds and ended at third position after the second practice session. Perez was followed by the Spaniard, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari who set his best lap time of 1 minute and 30.341
seconds. Moreover, Alonso was the first driver who went out on intermediate tyres during the middle of the FP2.
Teams waited after some transitional lap times, when they had a break, in order to allow the track to dry out a bit more before the exciting ending session.
Kamui Kobayashi of Sauber was the fifth quickest driver on the timesheets after he set his best lap time of 1 minute and 30.709 seconds. Paul di Resta of Force India followed Kobayashi while he set the lap time of 1 minute and 31.466 seconds.
Ferrari’s Felipe Massa who had been quite confident for the first GP set the sixth fastest lap time of the second practice session with the time of 1 minute and 31.505 seconds.
Caterham driver Heikki Kovalainen followed Massa and set his best time of 1 minute and 31.932 seconds.
Schumacher’s teammate Nico Rosberg set his best lap time of 1 minute and 32.184 seconds and stood at ninth position after the practice session ended.
Red Bull Racing drivers, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber set the tenth and eleventh quickest lap times.
Moreover, it would be interesting to know that the defending championship have still been considered favourite for the forthcoming season despite the issues in the RB8, faced during the last day of the final test held at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.
Webber was followed by Timo Glock of Marussia after he set the twelfth best time in the FP2 which was quite impressive. Glock was followed by Romain Grosjean of Lotus.
Jenson Button of McLaren set the fifteenth fastest time in the FP2 after setting the best lap time during the FP1. Button was followed by his teammate Lewis Hamilton. However, Hamilton remained in the garage for most of the time during the session.
