Michael Schumacher expected to retire before his contract expiration – Johnny Herbert
The 7 time Formula 1 world champion, Michael Schumacher, might retire by the end of this year according to the German’s former teammate, Johnny Herbert.
“I would not be surprised if my old team-mate Michael Schumacher retires for good at the end of the season. Schumacher did not return to Formula One just to make up the numbers. He came back to win races and add titles to his already impressive career statistics.
It has not happened, and the simple fact is that he is no longer the best driver on the track”, Herbert told the media.
Herbert used to drive alongside Michael back in 1994 and 1995 in team Benetton and during this time, the German secured his first two Formula 1 titles.
Schumacher made his return to the sport in 2010 with Mercedes GP, and since Mercedes secured the championship back in 2009 with Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello, it was expected that Michael would perform at his best once again after his return.
However, the German driver has been unable to perform up to his fans’ expectations after his return and according to his recent performances this year, it seems that he won’t be able to do so in the near future either.
These sorts of rumours have haunted the 7-time world champion ever since he returned to the sport and this time, it was Johnny Herbert, who stated that if Michael decides to retire this year despite the fact that his contract is expected to expire in 2012,
it would not be a surprise for the Formula 1 world.
“Schumacher has not lost any of his skill; the new generation of young drivers are just better than him”, he said.
He added that Michael did not return to the sport to drive for a mid-running team in the sport and his dream was to make Mercedes become race winners in 2011. Unfortunately, that is not the case and it seems that the 7 time world champion might not be able
to increase numbers in his championship tally.
