Michael Schumacher expects a closer fight in 2012 – Formula 1 news
Michael Schumacher says that he expects a closer fight amongst the teams this season than the last couple of years.
However, he did not express anything about how Mercedes would perform against the contenders in the upcoming 2012 Formula 1 season.
Schumacher had quite a struggling season after his comeback in F1 during 2010 and he was completely outperformed by his teammate Nico Rosberg. However, he made some good efforts to prove his presence in the last season.
After the end of the last day of the final pre-season test at Barcelona, Schumacher completed 100 laps and set the eighth fastest lap time of 1 minute 22.939 seconds and he believed that the team had done reasonably well during the testing session.
“The car felt good from the very beginning, and we have managed to improve it over the test days, so I think we can say that we are very well prepared,” Schumacher said. “Again, what this means compared to our competitors is something I want only to go into
after some races, as we all know that testing does not show everything. What we can say though is that the field is tighter than it has been, so we are looking forward to an exciting season.”
However, the team faced the issue of tyre degradation during the final day of the last test as they were losing on average about 2 seconds every 10 laps.
Moreover, after day two of the final test Schumacher revealed that the team needed to focus on the problem of tyre degradation while he admitted that major rivals of the team were attaining superior mileage from the Pirelli tyres.
Ross Brawn, the team principal said that the forthcoming season would be quite exciting. Moreover, he said that it would be imprudent to make any kind of judgement about the team’s ability to perform in the forthcoming season at this point in time which
he himself would avoid doing so.
Furthermore, he said that the upcoming season would be very thrilling for all the teams and especially the F1 fans around the globe while everyone had been keeping an eye on the season opener going to be held at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia on March
18, 2012.
