Michael Schumacher reprimanded for collision with Sergio Perez at Singapore Grand Prix – Formula 1
Mercedes GP driver Michael Schumacher has received a reprimand for his collision with Sergio Perez at this past weekend’s 2011 Singapore Grand Prix which took place at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
“It was a very unfortunate ending to my race in Singapore tonight and obviously I am a bit disappointed. What happened was what I would call a misunderstanding between Sergio Perez and myself. He was about to go inside and lifted, and I was not expecting
him to do that so early, and therefore hit him,” said Schumacher.
The seven-time former world champion was not able to judge the braking point of Sergio Perez’s car as a result of which his car hit the rear of the young Mexican’s Sauber and crashed into the barriers.
At first, it seemed like Perez’s fault as he slowed down a little unusually but later on after having a look at the replays, the stewards stated that it was not just one driver’s fault completely. They said it was a racing incident keeping in mind that both
of the drivers did make their fair share of mistakes in it.
Therefore, the two drivers were not penalised during the race as it was just another racing incident and these sorts of things happen in Formula 1.
“It's probably one of those race incidents which look more impressive from outside than from inside, as I am totally ok and my impact in the end was not too heavy,” said the former world champion.
Since the Marina Bay is a street track, the safety car had to be deployed as a result of which the pace of the whole race changed and some of the drivers benefited from it as well.
Sergio Perez was able to continue the race and he finished in 10th place to secure a useful point for the team mainly because of the race restart.
Otherwise, he would not have been able to finish in the points keeping in mind that he had to pit after his collision with Schumacher’s Mercedes.
