Michael Schumacher retires out of 2011 Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix due to gearbox problem
Mercedes GP driver Michael Schumacher recently had to retire out of the 2011 Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix due to a gearbox problem.
Following the retirement, Schumacher stated that even if he did not retire, finishing in eighth position would have been the maximum possible result.
“An unfortunate end to my race today when we suffered a gearbox problem which forced my retirement. As far as we know, this had nothing to do with the spin I had when fighting with Felipe which was mainly caused by avoiding contact,” he said.
Michael was having a decent weekend at the Hungaroring as he scored some pretty good results during the free practice sessions and even during qualifying, he qualified into the Q3 round and started from 9th place on the grid.
However, the race was quite difficult for the teams this weekend as they had to race under wet conditions in the beginning keeping in mind that they did not get to setup for wet conditions throughout the weekend.
After a while, the track dried out a bit and the teams shifted to the super soft tyres as well after which the race became much easier for them.
As a result, Schumacher was unable to perform at his best as well.
“I came in for dry tyres one lap too late, but we can only handle one car at a time obviously. From then onwards, the race developed normally, but I would not have been able to make a very big step forward from the position I was in when I retired,” said
Schumacher.
His teammate Nico Rosberg on the other hand finished in 9th place and gave the team two much needed points as a result of which, they were able to take the advantage over their rivals Lotus Renault GP in the constructors’ standings.
Mercedes GP are currently in 4th place now in the constructors’ standings with 80 points while Renault are still stuck in 5th place with 66 points as they were once again unable to secure a single point this weekend.
