Michael Schumacher says he did not stop Lewis Hamilton in the Spanish Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Mercedes GP driver Michael Schumacher has clarified that he did not come in front of Lewis Hamilton at the recently held Spanish Grand Prix.
The seven-time Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher of the Mercedes GP team was accused by McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton that the German deliberately came in front of him in Barcelona.
Hamilton was pointing towards that time of the race when his hot pursuit against Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel was on.
However, Schumacher has now said that he never came in front of Hamilton in the race and would have never done that in any circumstances.
The German also added that although Vettel is his country mate, he still respects Hamilton as well because the Brit drives a Mercedes engine.
Schumacher said, “I don't recall this, and I think it wouldn't make sense. Although, yes, Seb is my friend, Lewis is running with a Mercedes engine and that's a lot more important to me.”
The German added, “Not that I try to favour, or not favour anybody. That certainly must have been a misunderstanding. It's not my idea. I try to get out of the way for anybody. I just do my own thing.”
The incident happened when the top four drivers of the Spanish Grand Prix lapped every other driver on their way to the chequered flag.
On top of that epic battle, Hamilton was giving a really hard time to Vettel only before the slow runners came into play.
On a few occasions, both Hamilton and Vettel escaped penalties when they did not slow down on yellow flags and on a few other occasions, some of the back runners came in way of their chase thereby compromising the thrill.
Schumacher was also one of the lapped drivers and when the front running drivers overtook him, he deliberately or not, came in Hamilton’s way.
Nevertheless, Hamilton did not put his defeat on Schumacher and stated that it all came down to the pace of Red Bull which was hindering his win.
Overall, the Spanish Grand Prix turned out well for the McLaren team but surely in the Monaco Grand Prix on May 29, 2011, every driver will try to obey the flags before the race stewards notice it.
