Michael Schumacher says rear wing caused problem in Malaysian GP Qualifiers – Formula 1 news
Seven-time Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher was once again not able to live up to the expectations as he finished in 11th position in Qualifiers of the 2011 Malaysian Grand Prix.
Schumacher stated that the rear wing of his car was stuck and caused problems at the end of the Q2 session. He hoped for a tight race on Sunday and said that at Sepang, anything can happen.
Schumacher was going well in the Qualifiers and was at the tenth position at the end of the Q2 session as he was slowing down on the final laps to get prepared for the final session because his car’s rear wing was giving him some trouble. His teammate, Nico
Rosberg climbed up the table, pushing him down to 11th place.
The German veteran was disappointed by the performance and said, “We had some issues with the rear wing activation today and unfortunately that's what compromised my last run in Q2. The car became difficult to drive, which is a real shame as it had been
working very well during the earlier runs.”
The Mercedes team has done well in the Free Practice sessions to prove their point and make every other team count them, but in Qualifiers, Schumacher was not able to really challenge the Red Bull team.
Nico Rosberg made it to Q3 and finished ninth almost two seconds behind the pole sitter, Sebastian Vettel, which clearly suggests that Mercedes are slower than the Red Bull car on straights.
Schumacher added that with a circuit like Sepang, anything is possible if a team gets a good start. Nico Rosberg was also disappointed by his performance in the Q3 as he was only able to finish ninth behind less experienced Renault’s rookie, Vitaly Petrov.
“The team have made some good progress here and I had a decent balance up to Q2 today. Unfortunately I lost that feeling in Q3,” said Rosberg. The German also had a wing issue but said that the team will take care of it before the race on Sunday and hopefully,
he and Schumacher will put some up fight at Sepang.
Mercedes will be far behind the Red Bull team and even from the podium finish. A miracle in Sepang is required to see Schumacher on the podium after a long time.
