Michael Schumacher still confident about Mercedes GP’s chances this year – Formula 1
The seven time Formula 1 world champion, Michael Schumacher, has recently stated that he is still confident about Mercedes GP’s chances in the 2011 Formula 1 season, despite their disastrous performance at the season opening race that took place in Australia
on the 27th of March.
Both of the Mercedes drivers retired out of the race due to some damage to their respective cars, which was apparently not their fault because they were hit by other cars.
Since the team’s new car, the Mercedes W02, showed some impressive results during the pre-season testing period, it seems that the team is still optimistic about its 2011 run. However, Schumacher was unable to give a good qualifying performance and retired
disappointingly after the 19th lap of the race, even though the crowd was expecting a very good performance from him at the season opener.
“There's absolutely no doubt we want to do better than in the opening race, which was a disappointment for all of us. We clearly see that as a challenge and it is much too early to write us off. Everybody in the team remains positive and is in a fighting
mood, so I expect a better weekend for us to come, a weekend we can build on,” Michael told the media.
Other than him, the team’s boss Ross Brawn echoed the seven time world champion’s words and stated that even though the team has suffered from a number of problems at the Australian Grand Prix both during the race and the qualifying session, the team still
has a good car with great pace which can challenge the top running teams in the sport.
“Our priority since Melbourne has been to regroup back at our factories, to review the weekend in detail, and to establish the best way to achieve the full potential of the car from Malaysia onwards,” said Ross. He added that the biggest challenge for his
team is going to be the way the team responds to the loss they suffered at the Australian Grand Prix keeping, in mind that the team was upbeat about its chances of challenging for the podium positions at the season opener.
The team was unable to give a good performance during the 2010 Formula 1 season and it seemed that they were nowhere near the top running teams, despite the fact that the same team won the championship a year before in 2009 but under the name BrawnGP.
Nevertheless, the 2011 Formula 1 season has just begun and the team is hoping to prove itself at the Malaysian race that is scheduled to take place on the 10th of April.
