Michael Schumacher thinks money is a factor of Mercedes’ uncompetitive performance – Formula 1 news
Michael Schumacher has said that Mercedes could not attain competitive results during the last three seasons because they didn’t have huge funds to build infrastructure for the car development as compared to their rivals.
Schumacher came back to F1 with the Silver Arrows back in 2010. Even though, he returned to the sport with highest hopes to win another title. However, he could not achieve his goals and was completely outperformed by his teammate, Nico Rosberg in the preceding three seasons.
Although, he performed quite well in 2012 and even scored an impressive third podium finish in the European Grand Prix. Conversely, he failed to score points with consistency and struggled with a lot of technical and tyre management issues which hindered his performance throughout the year.
It will be important to note that the veteran German driver has retired from the sport. He announced about his retirement after the news regarding Lewis Hamilton’s move to Mercedes in 2013 was confirmed.
The record championship holder has said that the Brackley based squad have struggled until now because they have not been able to spend much money on their development process as compared to their opponents.
“It's a factor,” Schumacher is quoted by Auto Motor und Sport. “Over the years Red Bull built an infrastructure and has a budget giving them the possibility to respond to anything in the best possible way. It is nothing more or less than what we had at Ferrari.”
Besides, he said that their 2012 car was developed under old conditions. Nevertheless, he has expressed that Mercedes have a very good infrastructure for the development of 2013 car and he is feeling really optimistic about them.
“If there were problems we had to take care of them so the development process was interrupted. Only now is there a structure that enables both. It’s a strong structure for 2013 and beyond. The car we had last year was built under the old conditions,” Schumacher told The Sun newspaper.
Let’s see whether Mercedes will be able to come up strong or not and how Hamilton drives alongside Rosberg in this season.
