Michael Schumacher wanted Ferrari to win the constructors’ title – Formula 1 news
Michael Schumacher, who retired at the end of the 2012 F1 season, has stated that he was hoping for Ferrari to win the constructors’ championship this year.
“I felt very sorry for the Ferrari team, to whom I still have such a close connection,” Schumacher said. “For this season, I would have much preferred to see the constructors’ champions wearing red.”
However, he still thinks that his fellow German driver, Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel, was the deserving one to win the drivers’ title.
“Now that the dust has settled, I would like to again congratulate Sebastian on winning his third world championship,” he said. “It was certainly a nerve-wracking race for him and he brought the season to a masterful end. I have known this guy so long and
like him a lot; I am really pleased for him. For me, the right man won the drivers’ championship.”
The driver displayed a positive gesture towards Vettel by allowing him to pass during the championship deciding Brazilian Grand Prix last weekend.
Schumacher had joined the Ferrari in 1996 and his talents helped the team reach new heights of success. Three years later, Schumacher helped the team win their first constructors championship since 1983 despite the fact that he had broken his leg in an accident
that season. Schumacher won his third to seventh drivers’ title with Ferrari making the record of five consecutive F1 championships that remains unbroken to this date.
Schumacher had been fighting Fernando Alonso, who was driving for Renault at that time, for his eighth title but lost and then quit Ferrari by announcing his first retirement at the end of 2006. He remained an advisor for the team during his years of retirement
before returning to the sport in 2010.
Vettel has been repeatedly compared to Schumacher, so much that he has been dubbed as ‘baby Schumi’ by the German media. While Vettel has always denied that he can break Schumacher’s records, it is obvious that his latest achievement has left him only two
more consecutive championships behind before he breaks Schumacher’s five title record.
Schumacher has recently announced that he will stay active by becoming a test driver for Kart racing.
