Michael Schumacher wants a reliable W03 for 2012 season – Formula 1 news
Michael Schumacher has said that he wants their 2012 Formula 1 car, the W03 to be reliable.
Schumacher set the fastest time lap on the second day of the first pre-season test at Jerez. He drove the Mercedes on the new Pirelli tyres to get a better understanding of the new compounds. He said that he hopes for as much track time as he can get prior
to the season opening.
Schumacher was clearly concerned that the team would only have eight days to test the new car and said that using those days wisely is going to be very important as there is not going to be much room to catch up once the season starts. The team needs to
be ready and prepared before the Australian Grand Prix which is the opening race of the season.
“The main point is the reliability factor,” Schumacher told reporters at Jerez. “I think if the car has a certain performance, you're going to dial that out reasonably quick unless you have unexpected circumstances which we occasionally had in the past.
We hope not to have this, we hope to learn our lesson and our program is done in a way that we believe in.”
While he admitted that the delay in the new car is not the ideal situation but that it also means the team gets more time to work on the car which is also very important. He said that the test days were not taken easily, and a lot of practice on the new
tyres was required and that is exactly what the team has done.
Schumacher’s fastest time lap will not be comparable to the 2012 edition cars and so there is still some wait before it will be revealed how the W03 will stack up to other cars on the grid for the 2012 season.
Schumacher has been working hard with Mercedes to get the most out of the car to be in contention for the 2012 title as many consider this season to be the German’s last. Schumacher though left a question mark over his future and said that he will decide
only after analysing the performance of the team at the end of the season.
