Michael Schumacher will continue to drive in the Race of Champions – Formula 1 news
Michael Schumacher, who will be retiring from Formula 1 at the end of this season, has stated that he will continue to drive in the Race of Champions (RoC).
Schumacher, who is currently driving for Mercedes, has been joining Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel to represent the team for Germany in RoC which takes place at the end of each racing year. The Mercedes driver says that even though he is leaving the sport for
good but he is still going to drive in RoC and is waiting eagerly for it.
“I'm very much looking forward to racing with my old mate Seb for another repeat of our title,” said Schumacher.
The German duo has taken part in the particular race for the last five years and not only that but also achieving the title every time.
“But my lucky number is actually number seven. So we've got to do this and then the one after. That would be the ultimate. Obviously this means I'm not retiring from the Race of Champions yet,” added the Mercedes driver.
The RoC is a racing event that portrays famous drivers from various racing sports. It is a unique event where drivers from Formula 1, World Rally Championship and NASCAR all come together. The first race had taken place in 1988. The event was moved to take
place at Wembley stadium in London in 2007 and also the format of the race was changed the same year. Teams were reorganised into pairs of drivers so as to represent their respective countries. The German pair is phenomenal in itself as they are constantly
compared to each other by racing critics.
Schumacher had announced his retirement once before in his career but came back to join Mercedes which did not turn out to be a good decision since he has not been able to perform. However, the driver is still excited about RoC.
He said, “I could have retired from it by the end of this year, but I don't want to. It's too much fun. And as long as I'm still a bit competitive in it, why not?”
