Michael Schumacher’s comeback is “unrealistic” – Alain Prost
The legendary Formula 1 driver, Alain Prost has said that Michael Schumacher lacked the “humility” to set a realistic target for his 2010 return to the sport.
Prost himself faced a similar situation once when he had returned from a one-year sabbatical to regain the world title in 1993. Alain succeeded while Michael looks like a clown with no sense of humour after his return.
Prost believes that Schumacher’s stated aim of an eighth championship is too “high and unrealistic”. Michael is currently being torn apart by his young teammate, Nico Rosberg in the same piece of machinery and his aims now seem quite amusing.
“He should have said that he was coming back to help Rosberg, or Mercedes in its first year, or his friend, Ross Brawn. It would have been easier for him. It may have been a lack of humility but I think he saw himself as more powerful than that,” Prost told
the media.
According to Alain, Michael set the bar too high for himself before returning with Mercedes and Ross Brawn is trying to bring back the time when he and Michael dominated the sport for 5 consecutive years. However, Brawn should realize this by now that it
is not possible anymore.
“For me, it's just a question of age. I think the tires are just an excuse because Schumacher always adapted to any sort of car. It was his great strength. It's just not possible to return to the top after being away for three years at that age. It's a matter
of physiology,” he added.
The former world champion’s comments were backed by Renault’s former team boss, Flavio Briatore, who was Schumacher’s boss when he was at Benetton where he had won two out of his seven drivers’ titles. Flavio also thinks that Michael should have returned
to Formula 1 with a different frame of mind and aim in order to achieve the best possible results.
“We know the Schumacher of Benetton and Ferrari. We know him as a super champion. It was not a right decision on his part to make a comeback. If he continues next year, it will be the same story,” he told an Indian newspaper.
After being bashed by the media and most of the professionals, Michael still believes that he has the capability of winning races and plans to do so next year also with Mercedes.
