Michael Slater believes Ricky Ponting will quit Test cricket
The former Australian batsman Michael Slater expects Ricky Ponting to retire from Test cricket following a terrible show in the Ashes series.
Ponting has been struggling for form and has been criticised widely by cricket pundits. Slater believes that Ponting might retire from Test cricket after the final Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). After the Perth Test, the Australians hoped
to continue with the momentum and win the Boxing Day Test match, however, the English team had other plans.
Slater said, “He's only human, he'll be forced to think about. This has been a big series and it hasn't panned out. He'll get a few days to himself after the Test. He'll be able to talk to his family and the selectors and take stock of what's happened.”
Slater further said that he wasn’t sure what was going through Ponting’s mind but he believes that the dismal show in the Ashes would lead to an end to his illustrious career. He stated, “I haven't felt the vibe from Ricky that this is the end, but only
he knows what he's really thinking.”
Not only Slater but former England captain Mike Gatting claimed that Ponting may think about retiring from Test cricket after the final match of the series. Gatting said, “It’s very sad. Ricky is a very proud man but a very frustrated man at the moment.
He's been one of the best in the world for the last 10 years. He probably will see it through to Sydney and we'll see what happens after that.”
After the loss at the Adelaide Test, Ponting was criticised for his captaincy and his performance but the stylish batsman claimed that he wouldn’t quit cricket this early. He said that it was up to the selectors to decide the future captain but he would
continue representing the team as a senior batsman even if he was sacked from the captaincy.
Several Australian players stated that the team was fully behind captain Ricky Ponting and they believed that he was the right man to lead the team. The vice-captain Michael http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120 has been struggling for form as well who is believed to be the next man to
lead the Australian team.
