Michael Tammaro, trainer of Golden Choice, who was the three-year-old Canadian champion, passes away at the age of 57 
Belonging to a family that was deeply indulged in different occupations in horse racing, Michael A. Tammaro passed away on 27th January at an age of 57 due to a heart attack after a long illness that he suffered at St. Elizabeth
Hospital in Edgewood, Kentucky.
He was the son of John Tammaro Senior, who is most famous because of training the 1981 juvenile champion and leading sire, Deputy Minister. John Tammaro III, who is Michael’s brother, is a trainer and sister, Cathy Tammaro was busy as an assistant
to Michael for recent years.
His family’s contribution for the horse racing industry does not end here as his nephew, Dean Sarvis is a jockey while his other nephew, John Tammaro IV, works as a black smith.
The family resides in East St. Louis, III, Burlington, Kentucky where Michael Tammaro was born. The family, relatives and connections have planned a public memorial at 1 p.m. on Thursday, 3rd February on the fifth floor of the
Turfway Park Racing Club.
He was awarded with the leading trainer titles for the winter/spring meets in the year 1992 and 1993 at Turfway Park, while he had won the Wishing Well Stakes, Cincinnati Trophy Stakes and winning the Hansel and Forego Stakes twice.
According to the statistics quoted by Equibase, that has maintained the records since 1976, Michael Tammaro’s purse earnings range more than $17 million while having won 930 times from the 8,380 starts. His final starter, Dancin Skeeanno raced at Turfway
Park on 20th January.
 Out of the sixteen stakes winners that Michael trained, Golden Choice became Canada’s champion for the three-year old male category in 1986.Golden Choice’s two most memorable classics are the Queen’s Plate Stakes and the Prince of Wales Stakes.   
His very first win as a trainer came around in 1975 at Laurel Race Course, while Bid For Me was racing. Pursuing his career, he travelled extensively which led him to compete on tracks across the Midwestern and eastern United States and Canada.
The thirty stakes wins that he amassed through his career includes the 1998 Grade 3 Firecracker Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs with Claire’s Honor, then the Grade 3 Gardenia Handicap in 1997 with Three Fanfares and finally in 1986, he won the Grade
3 Niagara Handicap with Golden Choice.
His services and contributions for the industry will be remembered for years to come.
