Michael Thompson surprises everyone at the 2012 US Open
Michael Thompson, a little known golfer from Alabama, has surprised many at this year’s US Open. He was the unexpected leader after day one of the tournament.
He shot 66, and has been a previous runner-up at the Olympic Club, in 2007.
Before the start of the event, his ranking was 90th and he had no wins. Hardly anyone knew him but after his outstanding performance in this year’s US Open, he earned the second place.
This is the second time has been a runner-up at this golf course. Previously, he was at the same position five years ago, in the US Open amateur.
He came up with the play that was needed to do well in the tournament and had the best score at the Olympic Club in the final round.
He shot 67 with 3-under but overall he ended up with 2-over par, leaving him tied with the 2010 US Open champion, Graeme McDowell.
Thompson himself was surprised with his performance, as he did not expect to do this well in the championship.
Before the start of the tournament, he thought that if he could manage one-over every day, then it would be very ideal. However, not only did he manage under par, he also managed to leave behind the likes of Tiger Woods, and Phil Mickelson.
Such a performance is surely a confidence booster for a player. He said that playing back in 2007 helped him greatly and the experience which he gained then helped him perform well at the 2012 US Open.
Finishing in the top eight means that he has earned a spot in the next year’s Masters.
After this result, Michael Thompson is on cloud nine, as he not only finished second, earned a hefty amount of money but also earned a spot in next year’s Masters.
With a player so young in his career, surely more impressive feats are to come from Thompson.
Thompson has clearly mentioned that he would love to make is his way to FedEx Cup. Performances like these will surely help him move ahead and mature him more as a player and as a professional. His second place finish at the 2012 US Open is surely a big
step forward.
