Michael Thompson takes home the Honda Classic title
Michael Thompson took home his first PGA Tour title, when he defeated Geoff Ogilvy with a two-stroke margin at the Honda Classic, on Sunday, March 3, 2013.
The tournament was being staged at the PGA National Champion Course at Palm Beach Gardens, offering a prize fund of US$ 4 million, to its participants.
The Honda Classic is known from attracting a strong field year. This year too, event reeled in some prominent names, including the likes of 14-time major winner Tiger Woods, world number one Rory McIlroy, former Masters Champion Charl Schwartzel and many more.
Despite playing against such a strong field, Thompson did not lose control over his nerves and stayed on top of the leaderboard, till the end of the tournament.
Entering the final round, he was sharing the lead with Luke Guthrie. While Guthrie struggled to maintain his form and faltered for a three-over par 73, Thompson held the top spot after carding a one-under par 69.
Thompson started his final-round campaign by carding par putts on the first two holes, followed by an amazing eagle on the third hole.
He then conceded three bogeys against two bogeys over the next six holes to reach the turn in one under.
The back nine of the course witnessed him add another birdie to his scorecard, while conceding a bogey, to finish the week with a nine-under par 271 tournament score.
He was really happy to make such a strong comeback after finish dead last in the last tournament that he played on the PGA Tour, the Northern Trust Open, where he missed the cut and finished 158th on the leaderboard.
“Today I did a really good job of not thinking about all of the things that happen after a win or after I get done playing. I just kept telling myself, even on the last hole, was just stick to what you've been working on,” said the first-time winner on the PGA Tour. “Kept telling myself, really, go find it in the dirt. Just go find it in the dirt. That bunker shot, it wasn't the best lie, or best stance”.
