Michael Tran gets into the share of the lead at the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters
Vietnam’s Michael Tran cruised into the shared lead midway through the second round of the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters in Malaysia.
Tran is on nine-under, following his opening-round 67, with an impressive four-under 68 at the at the Kota Permai Golf & Country Club.
Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand remained in the lead, after recording a three-under par 69. On day one, he posted an amazing six-under par 66 on the leaderboard.
Tran got off to a strong start, as he birdied the first hole of the day. He then followed it by another two birdies on the fourth and fifth hole for a three-under par score.
The back nine of the course also witnessed him play some good shots. He recorded a total of five birdies against a lone bogey, to take a one-stroke lead over the Australian Marcus Both.
Tran is currently the only Vietnamese player, to represent his country on the Asian Tour.
This year, he missed the cut at the Asian Tour Qualifying School. However, he managed to make it to the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters by using the country invitation category.
“I’m just having a walk in the park. I’m not thinking about anything at all which I’ve managed to do in the last 36 holes,m” he said.
“It won’t be easy to do that in the last two rounds though! But that’s the game of golf, you need a bit of nerves to push you forward,” said Tran, who totalled nine-under-par 135”.
Recently, he confirmed that he may announce his retirement from the sport next year and start teaching golf lessons locally. However, a strong finish this week can force him to rethink and change his plans for the future.
“I was planning to do some teaching a bit and my family has some business. That’s just a plan because you never know what might happen in the next four months or this week! But I’m trying not to think about it,” he said.
In the meantime, Javi Colomo also maintained a good form and posted a three-under par 69 for a seven-under par overall score. He now shares the fourth spot on the leaderboard along with Jhonnel Ababa.
