Concerned by the weakened impact of English T20 cricket, Former English skipper, Michael Vaughan, said that the domestic tournament needs a radical shift in order to attract fans to take more interest.
"We've got to try to make it a bit different and create the 'wow' factor," said the former captain.
The current season marks the 10th year of the domestic English T20 competition. "In the first couple of years it was brand new, razzmatazz, the audience saw something very fresh and liked it,” he said while talking to BBC Radio 5 live.
English Cricket Board (ECB) launched its own T20 Cup competition in 2003 as it was aspired to add to the charm of county cricket. Another incentive was to look after the financial security of the counties and the domestic structures by attracting crowds
to packed houses and sold-out games.
The tournament had a phenomenal success and surpassed its expectations in the initial years, but with time, the gloss started to wear off and the interest waned with the emergence of similar competitions around the world.
Many cricketers today including Vaughan believes that the county T20 lacks the fanfare and razzle-dazzle of franchise T20 cricket, making Indian Premier League (IPL), Big Bash League (BBL) and the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 Premier League (BPL) a bigger success than the
English Friends Life T20 competition.
“I look at all the other Twenty20 tournaments around the world - including the Indian Premier League and the Big Bash in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746. You see a different format, more of a show being put on, away from just the cricket, and I think that's very important,” the
former player from Manchester said.
Weather is another factor that has caused widespread disruption in the competition, and a number of county chief executives recently propelled the idea of restructuring group stages to better serve the competition.
Vaughan also believed that while the weather in UK cannot be controlled, there is scope of improvement through domestic transformation, both in the game’s format and by creating the right atmosphere if English T20 has to compete with other leagues around
the world.
“Big crowd, lot of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Beau-Casson-c47541, lot of energy we've got to try and create that atmosphere more often," Vaughan further said.
