Michael Warren earns Boys 5km gold: Day three – 2012 Australian Open Water Championships
Palm Beach Currumbin Sports Club’s Michael Warren displayed more urgency towards the finishing end and troubled his rivals by earning gold medal of the 5km discipline in Boys 16 Year Olds class on concluding day of the 2012 Australian Open Water Championships on Sunday, February 19.
The 16-year-old Warren, who made his first appearance in the championship, demonstrated his smothering efforts by winning gold medal of the 5km discipline.
The Australian open water meet was subject to provide a platform to all national players as it paves the way for the forthcoming 2012 London Olympic Games.
Warren stunned the crowd with his incredible efforts in the 5km discipline, where he made no mistake and grabbed gold medal in his first event.
The teenage swimmer experienced strong contest from his toughest competitor, Hugh Cumming of St Peters Wester in the open water race but with his true determination, he earned his way to the victory stand for gold medal.
He clocked a time of 1 hour, 00 minutes and 27.88 seconds for gold medal. He was trailed by Cumming, who covered the same distance in 1 hour, 00 minutes and 32.53 seconds and seized silver medal of the race.
Cumming was followed by Blake Fulko of Campbelltown, who remained nearly three seconds away from his former finisher and ended third with the timing of 1 hour, 00 minutes and 35.21 seconds.
In the meantime, the crowd witnessed dominating effort of Oliver Bourne of Ginninderra, who captured the title of equivalent discipline in 17-18 Year Olds category. The 17-year-old Bourne remained prominently ahead of his competitors and posted a time of 1 hour, 00 minutes and 28.18 seconds for gold medal.
He was trailed by Andrew Hacker of USA, who was almost nine seconds slower and secured silver medal of the race in a time of 1 hour, 00 minutes and 37.35 seconds. The silver medallist remained just 0.64 seconds faster from David Phillips of Campbelltown, who clinched bronze medal in a time of 1 hour, 00 minutes and 37.99 seconds.
Furthermore, the session ended after the completion of all scheduled events in Boys and Girls corner.
