Michael Weiss grabs Men’s 400m IM gold – US Open Swimming Championships
Michael Weiss of Wisconsin Aquatics grabbed gold medal of the Men’s 400m Individual Medley (IM) on third day of the 2012 US Open Swimming Championships at Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis on Thursday, August 9.
The 21-year-old Weiss stunned the aquatic crowd with his gruelling form in the playoff of IM discipline, where he outsmarted the fastest qualifying swimmer, Matthew Johnson of Great Britain in a comfortable manner.
Weiss faced no trouble in securing gold medal of the event as he rushed his way to the wall with an effort of 4 minutes and 15.79 seconds.
Weiss was chased by Adam Hinshaw of Palo Alto Stanford, who stayed 2.12 seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and occupied silver medal of the race by producing a time of 4 minutes and 17.91 seconds.
The 18-year-old Hinshaw was followed by Stephen Schmuhl of Indiana University, who stayed one body length behind and stepped on the victory stand for bronze medal by reporting a time of 4 minutes and 18.74 seconds.
Schmuhl was trailed by Johnson, who failed to live up to the expectations of his supporters and finished fourth in the race by touching the wall with a timing of 4 minutes and 18.93 seconds.
The British swimmer was traced by Kyle Whitaker of University of Michigan, who failed to make a notable improvement in his pace and ended his swim in fifth best place by submitting a time of 4 minutes and 21.06 seconds.
Whitaker was chased by Samuel Trahin of Indiana University, who suffered a loss of 0.64 seconds from his former finisher and clocked a time of 4 minutes and 21.70 seconds.
Subsequently, Trahin enjoyed a benefit of 0.59 seconds over Maxwell Williamson of Northern KY Clip, who concluded his swim in seventh best place by touching the wall with a timing of 4 minutes and 22.29 seconds.
Last position of the swim was secured by Alex Wold of Santa Clara Swim Club, who was 0.92 seconds apart and posted a time of 4 minutes and 23.21 seconds.
Furthermore, Weiss expressed happiness over his gold finish in the IM event at the medal ceremony.
