Michael White downs Martin Gould in thrilling final frame – 2011 Pink Ribbon Tournament
The Welshman, Michael White, has beaten the Englishman, Martin Gould, by a frame score of 4-3 in the best-of-seven frame quarter-final match of the 2011 Pink Ribbon Tournament, held at the South West Snooker Academy in Gloucester.
The current world number 21, Martin Gould, who previously outplayed the likes of Chris Norbury and Jamie Jones, has fallen down in the last eight. However, it was an impressive performance from the 19-year-old teenager, White, as he held his nerves to edge
past his heavily favourite opponent in the deciding frame.
Meanwhile the overall score-line between both players was 92-31, 0-78, 0-81(52), 76(55)-6, 33-84(74), 71(70)-1 and 65-0.
The opening frame was a scrappy affair, as both players toiled their rhythms and dug deep into the safety battle but in the end, it was Gould who appeared on top to draw the first blood 1-0. However, any early nerves were removed by White, who levelled the
things by 1-1 in the following second frame without doing anything outstanding.
Third frame also went in White’s favour, as he compiled a modest break of 52 in it to go in front at 2-1. The 29-year-old Gould, who was not given a chance to pot any ball in the previous two frames, also responded in the fourth frame with a carving break
of 55 to level the score-line at 2-2.
Gould was also the first one to be among the balls in the fifth but this time he lost control of his emotions breaking down on 33 and when the chance presented itself, the teenager slotted a magnificent break of 74 to restore his one frame lead at 3-2.
Though Gould showed nerves of steel in the sixth frame and produced a classy break of 70 to force the decider, he succumbed to his opponent in the deciding frame.
White did not do anything outstanding but his flawless safety skills were enough to take him to the finish line.
The other winners who have cruised into the semi-final are Mark Joyce, Jimmy Robertson and Michael Holt.
