Michael Wild, Jak Jones, David Singh relish success: 2011 World Snooker Q School, round one – day 1
Michael Wild, Jak Jones and David Singh defeated Robert Valiant, George Marter and Lyndon Gordon respectively in their first round matches on the first day of the 2011 World Snooker Qualifying School.
The fourth session of the first round witnessed four matches with two whitewashes, one close encounter and one walkover.
In the fourth match, Mike Hallett got a walkover against the Indian Lucky Vatnani because Vatnani has already qualified after receiving a wildcard for the main tour of the 2011-12 snooker season.
Michael Wild 4-3 Robert Valiant
The most thrilling encounter of the session between the Englishmen, Michael Wild and Robert Valiant ended in a decider frame with Wild coming out as the winner.
The match remained a topsy-turvy affair until the end of sixth frame as both players struggled to give their best to capitalise during the match.
Wild grabbed an 1-0 early lead to surprise his opponent in the beginning of the match after he took the first frame by 68-16 firing a superb half-century knock of 53. Valiant made a strong comeback in the second frame but he had to face a tough resistance
from Wild. However, Valiant managed to clinch the next frame at 50-61 to pull level at 1-1.
Wild made a huge mark in the third frame when he took it 90-9 but a tussling fourth frame victory by Valiant brought the score line level again at 2-2. The 27-year-old Valiant made it 3-3 after grabbing the sixth frame with a convincing score line of 3-54
and pushed the game into a decider frame.
The last frame of the match was a real thriller as the pair was taking every chance to take the victory. However, Wild took the frame by 74-63 and won the game 4-3.
Jak Jones 4-0 George Marter
The Welshman Jak Jones made a huge impact on the Englishman George Marter when he clinched his first round match by a tremendous score line of 4-0 with the help of superb knocks of 54 and 64 along with some decent small breaks to build the frame scores of
56-30, 94 (54)-10, 96 (64)-19 and 69-42.
David Singh 4-0 Lyndon Gordon
India’s Singh took a whitewash victory over the South African potter Lyndon Gordon and booked his spot against Bash Maqsood in the second round.
Not many major breaks were fired during the match yet Singh completely outplayed Gordon with an overall score line of 75-5, 68-17, 75 (61)-0 and 66-35.
