Michael Wild ecstatic after beating Steve Davis in 2012 Australian Goldfields Open qualifiers
Third round of the 2012 Australian Goldfields qualifying session featured a major upset match where the amateur potter, England’s Michael Wild earned a whitewash victory by the score line of 5-0 over the former six-time World Snooker Championship winner, the veteran potter Steve Davis. Winning over the legendary potter Davis was a superb success for the Englishman.
Wild defeated two World Snooker Qualifying School (Q School) entrants, Daniel Wells and Simon Bedford in the first two rounds of qualifiers to set up Davis clash. Wild’s joy knew no bounds when he clinched the fifth frame of the match as it was a great achievement for him. The rookie has now made his way impressively into the fourth and final round against another former champ, Ken Doherty.
While speaking to the local media, Wild said, “I am absolutely over the moon to have beaten someone like Steve Davis, especially to stop him from even winning a frame. I played a solid match all the way through and crucially, my safety was good. The nerves never kicked in. Steve was great afterwards, He congratulated me on the win - and told me he hopes I win against Ken.”
Winning over the Nugget was indeed a marvellous success for Wild as he is just a rookie as compared to Davis but still he performed well against him despite a lot of pressure and was able to claim the victory.
Wild failed to book a place in the professional circuit this season despite his struggle in all three events of 2012 World Snooker Q School at the World Snooker Academy in Sheffield. However, the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) decided to give him a chance in the 2012 Australian Goldfields Open qualifier for his higher finish in the World Snooker Q School rankings.
Wild is looking forward to cash this opportunity and make his way into the pro tour. His next opponent is definitely one of the biggest names of snooker who can change the face of the game any instant.
Meanwhile, England’s Matthew Selt made a superb comeback from 3-1 down against Thailand’s Thepchaiya Un-Nooh and ousted him by the score line of 5-3 with the help of some classy clearance of 70, 70 and 63 points.
