Michael Wild whitewashes Steve Davis in third round of 2012 Australian Goldfields Open qualifiers
After missing his chances in the 2012 Wuxi Classic snooker event qualifiers, the veteran potter Steve Davis tried his luck once again in the qualifying session of the 2012 Australian Goldfields Open at the World Snooker Academy in Sheffield. However, despite
his struggle, the Nugget was not able to win even a single frame against amateur Michael Wild in the third round of qualifiers.
Playing against the former six-time World Snooker Championship winner was not an easy task and it seemed that Wild has been handed a tough draw in the third round. Nevertheless, he played sensibly from the start and gave no opportunity to the legendary cueman
to counter his attacking game. With the help of some superb snooker breaks during his competition run, Wild was able to triumph by 5-0.
The Oldham potter pocketed high breaks of 61 and 102 during his campaign and totally unnerved his opponent. Davis, on the other hand, tried his best to fight back in the middle of the game but failed to make an appearance and slipped down quite easily. Wild
will next meet the former World Snooker Championship winner from Ireland, Ken Doherty in the fourth round of the qualifying session.
Wild took part in this season’s World Snooker Qualifying School (Q School) but was not able to make it to the semi-final stage of any of the three events.
Meanwhile, due to his impressive form in the Q School, he did hold a higher podium place in the QS rankings which booked him a place in the 2012 Australian Goldfields Open qualifiers. He will not play in the qualifiers of other major ranking snooker tournaments.
He cashed this opportunity and made his way into the fourth round beating Daniel Wells and Sam Baird in the first two rounds.
In other qualifying matches, England’s Michael White continued his good form in the third round and fired the highest break of 72 to nudge Mitchell Mann 5-2 down in the third round.
China’s Cao Yupeng, who made his Crucible debut in the previous season’s World Snooker Championship, came strong over Mike Dunn and trounced him by the score line of 5-2 with the best break of 130 points.
