Michael Yani downs Andre Begemann to make it to the main draws – Hall of Fame Championships 2011
Seeded at number seven in the qualifying draws, Michael Yani of the United States took down the third seed Andre Begemann in the final round to make it into the main draws of the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships on
Monday.
Being played at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, United States, the contest ended in the most enthralling manner, with the American winning in straight sets 6-4, 7-6(4), taking one hour and twenty
seven minutes of play.
Begemann hung in the contest till the end but botched to take down the hard-hitting German competitor and submitted the contest in the second set. He dropped the opener earlier to fall on the back foot but made tremendous recovery
in the following set. However, Begemann failed to survive the intense pressure situation in the second set tie breaker and fell to Yani, sending him in to the main draws of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 event.
The opening set took off with an early exchange of serve breaks from the two contestants, which levelled the scores to 4-4. Yani took pace from there onwards and stung a vital serve break to serve for the set at 5-4. The American
had no real trouble in serving out of the opening set at 6-4, to get one up in the contest.
The following set took off once again with an exchange of one serve break each from both contestants and then went on neck-to-neck to reach 6-6. A tie breaker round was enforced but Begemann failed to sustain his momentum in the
decider and fell to his opponent at 6-7(4).
Both men competed very well throughout the contest but it was only the matter of time that Yani cashed in the crucial opportunities in time and came out as the winner in the end. Their serve accuracies and point winning percentages
were almost similar in the matchup but the American competitor took the better of his opponent by bagging the vital points in the game.
Begemann had his chances in the contest but he squandered the most of them to remain at disadvantage throughout the matchup. He converted just two of the seven break opportunities in the game, while his belligerent opponent cashed
in all the three break points he crafted in the two sets being played.
This straight sets victory over the German send Yani into the main draws of eh Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, where he will play his first match against Dudi Sela of Israel.
