Michael Yani vaporizes Chris Guccione in 1st round – Charlottesville Challenger 2011
Seventh seeded American Michael Yani routed Australian Chris Guccione in the main draw of the Charlottesville Challenger 2011.
The two players took up racquets on indoor hard courts of the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Virginia. After just fifty eighth minutes the seventh seeded American annihilated the Australian in straight sets of 6-3,
6-3 on Monday the 31st of October 2011.
Initiating the first round of the match was Guccione, who had decided to serve first after he had won the service pitch and he skilfully held his serve to ease on to the scoreboard at 1-0. Right behind him was Yani and he too held
his serve to place himself on the scoreboard at 1-1. In subsequent two games, the players once more bagged a game each and by the end of the fourth game the score had spun to 2-2.
It was in the fifth game that Guccione had double faulted on his second serve and endorsed a crucial breakpoint. On the contrary, Yani not only capitalized on the break but also held his serve to squander off two successive games
and shifted the scoreboard to 4-2 by the end of the sixth game.
Although, Guccione tired to make a return and even reduced the deficit to 3-4 by the end of the seventh game, he was still unable to clog the set. Nonetheless, as Yani held his serve in the eighth game, he was now only a game away
from bagging the opening set. The serve switched and Guccione’s forehand went wayward and he gifted the opening set to Yani, who had now taken an edge.
Yani commenced the second set and he tactfully held his serve to comfortably open the scoreboard at 1-0. Following behind was Guccione and he too held his serve to shift the scoreboard at 1-1. The players then matched an eye for
an eye in the next two games and by the end of the fourth game; the score had tied at 2-2.
During the fifth game, Yani smashed a marvellous backhand winner to clog his service game. Then by the end of the sixth game he benefitted from a break and took the lead on the scoreboard at 4-2. As he held his serve, Yani was
now only a game away but he was unable to close the game in the eighth game.
Mean while, Guccione had managed to reduce the deficit to 3-5 but he eventually lost the match in the next game. As Yani held his serve for the last time, he sealed his victory of the set and the match. During the second set the
seventh seeded American did not lose a single service game and instead, reserved a spot in the second round of the tournament.
