All-rounder Michael Yardy has decided to relinquish his post as skipper for County club Sussex in the 4-day and 40-over formats of the game, although he will be captaining the T20 team for the Friends Life t20 Finals Day in late August.
Yardy, who will be succeeded by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Yorkshire-c867 at the Sophia Gardens
in Cardiff on August 25.
“I have decided to step down as captain in order to concentrate on my own game,” said Yardy. “There are many things I still wish to achieve as a player which will also hopefully help contribute to the team winning more silverware. I would like to say a massive
thank you to everyone for all the effort they have put in over my time as captain and I look forward to leading the team at t20 Finals Day.”
Yardy took over the club captaincy in 2009, succeeding http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Christopher-Patrick-Adams-c50949, and went on to deliver immediately after being appointed, leading Sussex to victory in the Pro40 and T20 Cup during his first season as skipper. Sussex also went on to win the Division Two
title in the next season under Yardy’s lead.
A veteran of 150 first-class matches (8590 runs scored, 28 scalps taken), 190 list-A matches (3294 runs, 130 wickets), and 98 T20s (1078 runs, 78 wickets), the all-rounder has also played 28 ODIs (326 runs, 21 wickets) and 14 T20Is (96 runs, 11 scalps) for
the national side, after having made his international debut against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 in August 2006 at Bristol.
He played a major role in the Poms’ successful ICC World Twenty20 2010 campaign, and featured in the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 World Cup 2011, before depression issues forced him to pull out and fly home before the quarter-final.
Praising Yardy’s commitment to the team and to his own personal development, Sussex's Professional Cricket Manager http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mark-Andrew-Robinson-c74518 wished the left-hander well, before going on to confirm that Ed Joyce would “take over the captaincy duties until the end of
the season”.
The Irish batsman will be leading the team through the Clydesdale Bank 40 (in which Sussex are currently at the top of the Group C points table) and the Championship Div 1 (in which http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sussex-c852 are at number 4 on the points table). His first assignment is due
to be a Championship match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Worcestershire-c866 at Hove from August 1 to 4.
