Michael Young debuts at first base for the Texas Rangers
Michael Young made his appearance on first base on 4th April, 2011 in Arlington against the Seattle Mariners. The Texas Rangers’ player has been reserved for a designated hitter role and has been dubbed a super utility infielder. Manager, Ron
Washington had no problem in putting Young on the position recently, as the veteran player had been stacking up on experience in the position in Spring Training.
The manager has seen Young play well in the roster, his move up the field will boost his confidence in the club, as well as the squad.
"Michael's played in some tough positions on the field," Washington said. "Then you move him over to first base, not so tough."
Washington was able to talk about the designated hitter in detail, as he emphasized on the strategy to bring the seasoned player to the field as much as possible in the coming days. His focus was on getting the player at least one game in every series. Young
has been well acquainted with the infield, and has experience on third base, shortstop, and the second base.
"He'll get more comfortable at first base the more he plays the position," Washington said. "He can catch the ball. He can do the fundamental things you need done over there. We have to adjust him as far as positioning. We have to talk to him about situations
and the way things go. In that case, hopefully his teammates will help him out."
To date, the robust veteran has gone 6-for-21 in five games. He has managed to avail six hits and two RBIs. Against the Mariners recently, Young went 2-for-4. His hit went for extra base as he ran two bases and came out with a run in the end as his batting
average was .500.
The slugger has an on-base average of .286, while his batting average is also .286. This may be the experienced hitter’s last season, which has aroused a lot of concern in the crowd as Young has been the longest serving Texas player in the squad.
