Michael Young requests trade from the Texas Rangers
Life can get tough for a top team when its leading star demands a transfer. For the Texas Rangers, that is the case. The longest serving Rangers’ star on the roster, Michael Young wants out.
Young’s demand for a transfer will pile a lot of pressure on the club, which is pacing close to spring training. Young has been an inspirational leader at the helm, playing as the Rangers' third baseman for the past two years.
Last month, he was moved from his third baseman position for new comer, Adrian Beltre. Young had initially agreed, though reluctantly, to play the new role of Rangers’ Designated Hitter. He was also up for the first baseman position. He has since had a change of heart.
He told the club president, Nolan Ryan that he doesn't view himself as a designated hitter at this point in his career.
“I tried to assure him that from a career perspective, I didn't think it was a step down. Michael's feeling is that once you go to DH, you're going to be considered a DH. He feels that limits him as far as his career..,” Ryan said.
Team President, Nolan Ryan, spoke of Young fulfilling the Designated Hitter position. Young would have also been referred to the utility role if anyone on the squad would have been injured.
"I was excited at the possibility of having him at DH as well as being able to give our middle infielders a rest," Ryan said. "Also if somebody sustained an injury, to have a player of his calibre filling in would be a unique situation."
Young, however, seems to be less than pleased with his changing positions.
The Rangers have said that they will try to accommodate Young, but it would have to be in the best interests of the club. General manager Jon Daniels has said that ‘nothing is imminent.’
