Michael Young will report at camp in Arizona on February 19
In a remarkable story that has been haunting the Texas Rangers for several weeks, there has been a development - Michael Young, the club’s unofficial leader, is slated to report at the camp on Saturday in Surprise, Arizona. The
veteran infielder is going to be taking up his new role as the club’s designated hitter and there is not a word from him at the moment.
The club’s general manager, Jon Daniels, told the press about Young’s schedule recently and iterated that the 34-year-old will feature on the opening day as the club’s designated hitter. His secondary role to the franchise will
be of a super-utility infielder.
The player is a formidable star on the shortstop position and the third baseman position. Unfortunately, due to new players coming in, there is no vacant position for the veteran to take hold of. Adrian Beltre, who recently came
in from the Boston Red Sox through free agency, spoke on Young.
"I think this club's line up is better with him than without him," Beltre said. "I know these guys have a lot of respect for him and they definitely want him in the line up," Beltre said. "I hope everything works out and we can
stay together.”
Josh Hamilton, last year’s American League Most Valuable Player, was also delighted to hear that Young would be back with the club with a new role.
"He's been somebody I can look to," Hamilton said. "He's a veteran leader, somebody is respected on the field and off the field. He's about as professional as it gets in the game. In my first year in '08, he was a guy I could seek
and ask questions about the right way to do things and the routine -- all kinds of different things."
Michael Young and the Rangers are at odds at the moment, following a series of events that presided over the winter break period. The player has requested a transfer but with only eight teams in the option bracket, the Rangers
have no suitable offers to table currently. Hence, Young’s role in this season’s opener is the only way to go about in simple terms.
